The small town of Ripon, in eastern Wisconsin, is perhaps best known for being home to the historic one-room schoolhouse where the Republican Party was founded in 1854. That fact made it the perfect place for Vice President and 2024 Democratic nominee Kamala Harris and former Wyoming Republican Rep. Liz Cheney to campaign together Thursday night—about a month after both Cheney and her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, publicly endorsed Harris and her running mate, Gov. Tim Walz, in this year’s election. But the Ripon event represents a kind of cross-corridor cooperation that has become exceedingly rare in American politics.

Harris currently holds only a small polling advantage over former President Donald Trump in Wisconsin, but with just over a month to go until November 5, every public appearance counts — especially in swing states, and especially when Harris happens to be traveling with a prominent Republican. “Our republic is facing an unprecedented threat,” Cheney told a crowd gathered at Ripon College on Thursday, “a former president who has attempted to maintain power by dismantling the foundations of our republic by refusing to accept the lawful results, confirmed by dozens of courts, of the 2020 election.” Indeed, Cheney has spoken at length about Trump’s actions in (and in the months leading up to) the January 6 insurrection, urging that “Donald Trump is unfit to lead this great and good nation.” She added that as a lifelong Republican—who got involved in politics at age 10, when she volunteered for Gerald R. Ford’s re-election campaign, and who first voted for Ronald Reagan in 1984—Cheney will be endorsing a Democrat for the first time this November. (“I was a Republican before Donald Trump even started spray-tanning,” she said, laughing.)

“You may not have supported a Democrat for president before, but as you said, we both love our country and honor our democratic ideals,” Vice President Harris later said, addressing Cheney after taking the stage on Thursday. She went on to praise Cheney as “a leader who puts country above party and above self—a true patriot,” encouraging the crowd as they chanted “Thank you, Liz.” For her part, Cheney called on voters to “reject the depraved cruelty of Donald Trump” because “violence does not and must never determine who governs us. Voters do.” Behind her, a large sign reading “Country Over Party” was held amid red, white, and blue flags, reflecting the evening’s committed bipartisanship. One can only hope that the Harris-Cheney coalition will send a message of civility—and unity—to a tense and grieving nation in the weeks remaining before November 5.

While it may seem like Harris is leading, the reality is much more complicated. In the past, polls have tended to under-predict Trump’s support on Election Day. The real story, if you ask me, is what young voters will do. Young voters will be especially important this cycle: For the first time, Gen Z and millennials will make up nearly HALF of the eligible voting population. In 2020, young voter turnout was 50%—a big improvement from previous years and a possible sign of another high turnout in 2024.

No matter who wins, this election will be decided by a few thousand votes. That’s why young people—and whether they vote—are the most important variable. Current polls show that young people are overwhelmingly enthusiastic about Kamala Harris overall, but there is a significant and growing gender gap between men and women under 29. Recent New York Times/Siena polls of six swing states found that young women favored Harris by 38 points, while young men favored Trump by 13 points, for a difference of 51 points.

But remember—national polls are an indicator of general support, but they’re not how we elect a president. To be clear, the Electoral College, not the popular vote, decides the presidency. What does that all mean? As always, this election will be decided by voter turnout in specific places. In particular, voters in a handful of swing states—Pennsylvania, Arizona, Michigan, Nevada, Wisconsin, and Georgia—will decide our future. Here’s where those races stand, according to an average of solid polls:

After the ceremony, the newlyweds and all their guests boarded a boat to return to the reception together. “There’s nothing like having all the people who have been a part of both of your lives together. It’s a really surreal feeling,” Chandler recalled of the trip. While guests took a bus to Kualoa Ranch for a cocktail reception, the bride and groom rode custom e-bikes donated by Super73, decorated with a “just married” sign and cans of Juneshine: “Travis’s favorite drink!”

The morning of the wedding began with family and friends all helping set up tables and decorations for the reception. “It was special,” the bride recalled. The event began when guests, the bridal party and the groom took a boat out to Secret Island. Chandler would take another boat later with her parents for a grand entrance. “The ceremony was beyond our wildest dreams. It rained a little bit as my parents and I walked down the aisle and when I faced Travis the rain cleared and the sun was shining down on us,” the bride shared. “It was truly magical.” Travis’ brother, surfer Koa Smith, officiated the ceremony. “He’s probably the person who’s spent the most time with us as a couple and knows us so well that we were so happy he agreed to do it,” Chandler said. “Koa’s speech was the perfect mix of emotional and funny.”

The reception took place under the string lights of the breathtaking valley. The couple ensured the party had a relaxed feel with an open bar and buffet so guests could spend most of their time on the dance floor. “One of the most special moments of the reception was when our friend Louis Solywoda surprised us with a song he wrote just for us called ‘Dream Girl,’” Chandler recalled. “He wrote the song with a little help from our friend, the musician Ziggy Alberts. Everyone gathered around us as Louis sang us the most special song and gift we could have ever imagined. I think we all cried.”
