As strange as it sounds: pregnant and yet not pregnant. Someone recently pointed out that I was experiencing pregnancy like a man: sitting out waiting for the baby to come. I like to think of it that way. The grief, loss and shame of infertility are real, and what could be more luxurious than outsourcing the baking of baby cakes? It felt like “something only famous people do,” as my (very excited and supportive) mother said when we first told her. While Summer struggled with nausea and fatigue for the first 12 weeks, I spent the holidays emulating the Race Across the World, visiting friends and celebrating our good news with ice-cold Pét-nat. The biggest and most overwhelming feeling—after the excitement, of course—was a sense of our immense privilege, and, if I’m being completely honest, a sense of guilt. Of wanting more than my fair share. For most people, a ruptured uterus would abruptly end any hope of starting or expanding a family. Surrogacy is not a journey that everyone can pursue, partly because of the high cost. To be able to do it and have a wonderful woman with a super strong uterus do all the heavy lifting is a blessing.

It wasn’t without its stresses, though. Back to those celebrities, Khloé Kardashian has previously admitted that she initially had trouble bonding with her son, Tatum, who was born via surrogacy in July 2023. Of course, this made me nervous, but I think it was a small price to pay for everything we’ll gain by the end of this wild journey. Carefully marking the milestones helped us come to terms with the reality of not having physical changes. We had a small gender reveal party with close friends and family, and it was another boy. I downloaded the apps. (He’s now the size of a carrot, and about to become a papaya.) Having been uncomfortably open—almost boastful, in retrospect—when I was pregnant the first time, I’ve found it hard to tell people this time around, when normally ordering a mocktail or a decaf would be an easy conversation starter. But I’m not alone. The global surrogacy market is expected to grow from $11 billion to an estimated $76 billion over the next decade. The baby-baking business is really growing.

And so when someone like Selena speaks up, it helps. It helps those of us who desperately want to get pregnant but can’t. In voicing her reality and her acceptance, some of the painful truths of infertility can be tempered with hope. What a blessing. Years ago, I used to schedule a wash on laundry day, stepping out of the shower with dripping hair and scrunching it with a warm towel that had just dried it. I continued my routine as usual, but my hair still frizzed. Eventually, my stylist told me that I was also breaking a lot. I went on to list some of the strengthening treatments I’d tried—bond-repairing masks, anti-frizz serums—and thought there was no way I was doing anything wrong. “So, how do you dry your hair?” she’d asked. When I detailed the towel method, she stopped me, saying I should switch to microfiber towels instead.

For vintage designer fashion, New4another is a boutique and online store frequented by many São Paulo fashionistas. The store is decorated in pastel green and neatly organized with shoes, accessories, purses, and clothes in excellent condition. Oliver Park’s feature debut is based on the Jewish folk tale of the Abyzou demon, which (believe it or not) happens to be perfect fodder for a horror film set in a Hasidic funeral home in Brooklyn. Succession fans will go wild for this one, which stars Sarah Snook (aka Shiv Roy!) as an obstetrician whose young daughter’s strange behavior hints at the return of a ghost from the past. Zoe Terakes, Miranda Bird, Joe Otto, and more star in this Australian horror film about a group of friends who learn they can communicate with spirits from another world using a mysterious mummified hand. Good news for fans of this one: A sequel is in development. Okay, this movie is more horror comedy than actual horror, but it’s definitely worth watching, if only to hear Rachel Sennott say the immortal line: “Your parents are UPPER CLASS. MIDDLE CLASS.” (Plus, the movie is adapted from a story by Kristen Roupenian, so it has some literary interest.)

This isn’t a horror film, but the highly controversial plot of this critically acclaimed film certainly qualifies it as “spooky,” at the very least. Florence Pugh shines as a seemingly happy housewife whose reality is a little more complicated than it initially appears in this Olivia Wilde-directed horror film, which also stars Harry Styles. A young woman expecting her first child is cursed by a malevolent entity in this chilling Spanish-language horror film, which is honestly best skipped if you’re pregnant (unless it’s really, really hard to scare you).

An FBI agent is drawn into the world of the paranormal while trying to catch a serial killer in this 1990s thriller starring Nicolas Cage, Maika Monroe, and Blair Underwood. Set during the Night Stalker murders in Los Angeles in 1985, this A24 film stars Mia Goth as an aspiring horror actress and porn star who stumbles into a burgeoning lair of chaos on the set of her first real movie. This supernatural thriller looks at what might happen if all the characters in a deck of tarot cards came back to life and started hunting down a group of college friends. It’s a blast to watch! Not since the early days of Jordan Peele’s Get Out has a horror film been as deeply ingrained in the zeitgeist as M3GAN, as this Saturday Night Live skit proves. “I’ve never been too conscious of what I’m drawn to, but I feel like I’m constantly evolving with the material,” she says. “It’s like having certain types of literature or music that you really like at different points in your life. It’s all just a reflection of where I’m at personally or what I crave creatively.” Having turned 30 earlier this year, Ronan is excited to embrace a new era. After years of playing young adults, she finally got to play a character closer to her actual age in The Outrun, while in Blitz she got to play a mother for the first time—and even sing on screen. What is Rooney communicating through her repeated descriptions of a particular body type? Rooney’s female protagonists are sad, starving, and trembling during sex, while the men react almost fanatically to their small figures and perceived weakness. Normal People’s Connell marvels at how Marianne’s body “feels so small… and so open” during sex, and Beautiful World’s bisexual Felix admits to his lover Alice: “Whenever a girl asks me to open a jam jar, I fall in love with her.”

Thinness isn’t explicitly painted, but it’s pervasive enough to feel like a prerequisite for sexiness. Rooney—whose precise economy with words is commendable—focuses attention on “[Frances’s] taut belly,” Marianne’s “narrow and delicate” body, and Eileen’s “slender, reed-like white arms.” (Meanwhile, a female character’s thighs in Conversations With Friends are described as “holey with the texture of whipped cream.”) Naomi, a 20-something student and occasional sexpot from Intermezzo—a more robust, less graceful protagonist whose boyfriend considers her “a carnivore”—gorges on a “family-sized bag of Doritos.” But even as she eats, the “smooth bulge” of her prominent ankle bones is noted.

Then there’s Rooney’s latest novel, Intermezzo, out today. Intermezzo features supporting characters who are “small and fat” and have “full, pretty” faces. But the real action, as always, is focused on the thin characters. This time, it’s a young man, thin and shivering! But while Intermezzo expands Rooney’s idea of what a body can look like, thinness ultimately forms as much a plot device as it did in the previous three novels.

As the body positivity movement rose in the 2000s, followed by the athlesiure movement of the 2010s, more brands began offering more comfortable, structured bras in a wider range of sizes and styles. Bralettes and other underwire-free styles became popular, and many women began swapping cups for sports bras—or even opting to go braless altogether. Today, there’s a bra to suit every outfit—from plunging necklines to backless dresses—and every body, thanks to the growing emphasis on inclusivity. In the 1980s, bra manufacturers began to expand the range of sizes offered; the Wacoal brand was one of the first to offer bras up to H or K. Boundaries were also pushed in fashion, as celebrities from Madonna to Grace Jones began to sport wild, bra-centric outfits on stage and elsewhere. By the 1990s, a full range of bras was available to Western women—with padded bras, underwire bras, and push-up bras becoming the most widely worn styles. The rethinking of bras—and women’s role in society—continued into the following decade, when the first sports bra was invented. In 1977, childhood friends Lisa Lindahl, Hinda Miller, and Polly Smith spliced two panties together and called it the “Jogbra.”
