That night, fans packed into the iconic New York theater, excited to see their favorite artists in such an intimate setting. After Frankie Cosmos opened the show, the crowd cheered with delight as Wendy Rene opened her set with “After Laughter (Comes Tears).” When she emerged a few minutes after 9 p.m., she had swapped the beige knit sweater, straight-leg jeans, and combat boots I’d seen her in backstage for a pale blue pleated dress and brown knee-high boots. She took fans through each track from Charm, including new arrangements of “Sinking” from her debut album, Immunity (a new addition to the set), and “How” from her first EP. Cottrill swayed gently as she sang, her voice husky and sweet.

Twenty-one songs later, she’s finished her fourth night at Webster Hall, and is looking forward to her final New York show before kicking off her North American tour in Dallas on September 27. While on the road, she plans to spend her free time reading; she’ll bring a nightlight and her trusty heating pad on the bus. Maybe this is just the calm before the storm, but it seems to me that Cottrill is in a particularly content, grateful, even a little sad moment. “Being the perfect version of yourself is really cool,” Cottrill says. “I think if I met my 15-year-old self, the girl who was constantly online in her bedroom—my younger self—I would probably think that my adult self is cool. If you can think about the conversations you had with your past self, and you know that your younger self would be proud of you—then you’re on the path you’re supposed to be on.”

The first TikTok was their idea. Brooke Shields was in her youngest daughter Grier’s Wake Forest dorm room on move-in day of freshman year. Grier and her sister Rowan, a senior at the university, told their mom they wanted to film something. They started working on the idea: The actress would ask the kids if she was finally a single mom. When they answered, she would run out of the room, ecstatic about being free. Shields hesitated. She had mixed feelings about leaving them. But after some encouragement, she agreed. The TikTok has gotten more than four million views.
