If you need a little escape from your half-baked family this holiday season, consider Azazel Jacobs’ intimate drama about three sisters (played by Elizabeth Olsen, Carrie Coon, and the great Natasha Lyonne) who reunite in New York City to care for their dying father. Cue: intense infighting, a little light gambling, and some genuinely touching moments. This mother-daughter story stars Sex Lives of College Girls star Amrit Kaur as a young gay Canadian-Pakistani woman who returns to her family’s homeland after her father’s death. It’s sad, sure, but it also has enough humanity to make you cry over something other than your most conservative family member’s bad political jokes at the dinner table.

Adapted from director Stephen Karam’s own Tony-winning play, The Humans—about a family who gathers in a creaky, leaky Lower Manhattan apartment for Thanksgiving dinner—features a stellar cast, including Amy Schumer, Beanie Feldstein, Steven Yeun, and June Squibb. Come November, its earnest drama (and heartwarming humor) might be just what the doctor ordered. Yes, it was released on Christmas Day 2019—and has all the snow and crackling fires to make that happen—but Greta Gerwig’s passionate retelling of Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel could easily fit into Thanksgiving as well. One of the great family dramas of all time, Little Women is as much about four sisters making their way in the world as it is about the relationships that bind them all together.

To that end, we’ve put together a list of slightly more unconventional movies set on, around, or at least around the idea of Thanksgiving for you to enjoy. So, as you look forward to a long weekend of eating and drinking next month, check out our favorite unconventional Thanksgiving movies below. We know, we know, it’s a Zach Braff movie. But hear us out: This French-Canadian romantic comedy, set partly in the world of food, pairs wonderfully with copious amounts of turkey and side dishes. Plus, the subplot about Vanessa Hudgens’ bisexuality will be fun to discuss with your grandparents!
