And rising from the ashes of parenting exhaustion (and shouldering the emotional burden for our partners) is a fierce desire for empowerment. As the vines at the beginning of “Femininomenon” surrender to what sounds like the beating of our hearts, Roan asks us if we know what we want and need. And do we? “No!” A chorus of female voices rings out. And then the beat drops, the cowbells jingle, we stop folding laundry, and we dance to release our frustration.

Somehow, Roan has grasped lessons that most of us don’t learn until we’re in our 40s or 50s. When she declined to make the video for “Good Luck, Babe” because of touring exhaustion, weary premenopausal and menopausal mothers everywhere shouted “amen” at her no. She’s also made social media pleas for fans to respect her space when she’s out in public, which has infuriated those who insist that losing autonomy and privacy is part of her job as a celebrity. Similar expectations are placed on mothers, except instead of being icons, we’re martyrs: Our bodies, time, and energy belong to our families. We chose to be mothers, so we have no right to complain about being touched or needing more alone time.

In a recent interview with Kate Solomon for the Guardian, Roan spoke about the severe depression that came with sudden fame. “It felt like Roan had everything she ever wanted – and the weight of it was crushing her,” Solomon wrote. What mother, especially one who has struggled with postnatal depression, can’t relate? Much of Roan’s interview reminded me of my own struggle to have everything I want: two beautiful daughters. With a five-year-old and a nine-year-old, the last time I could leave the house without thinking about other people’s happiness was 10 years ago. When Roan set boundaries with her fans, I applauded her and took credit for it myself.
