Once you’ve chosen the right style of suede boot, care should be your top priority to ensure they last not just one season, but many. Vogue reached out to experts Sarah Pierson, co-founder of Margaux, and Jessie Randall, founder and creative director of Loeffler Randall, for advice. “We recommend treating your boots before exposing them to the elements to keep them looking their best,” Margaux co-founder Sarah Pierson told Vogue, suggesting using a suede protector from a trusted brand. She cites Scotchgard as one of her favorites, as well as Margaux’s specially developed suede care kit, which includes a spray cleaner and protector along with a suede brush.

“Be sure to test in an inconspicuous area before treating your shoes,” she advises. “You can use a suede brush to gently remove any marks or scuffs in the suede between wears, and a spray cleaner to treat surface marks or stains. After you’ve cleaned your suede—or at least after a few wears—retreat it with a protectant to protect it from future wear.” Loeffler Randall founder and creative director Jessie Randall also recommends NYC-based Leather Spa and its line of products as her go-to source. “For daily at-home care, you should purchase a suede brush to brush your shoes after wearing them. This removes dirt from the suede fibers before they set, helping to keep your suede shoes and boots looking great longer.” Properly storing suede shoes is also essential to extending their lifespan. “Before storing suede shoes (or any shoes), make sure they are completely air-dried, especially if they have been exposed to snow or rain,” says Pierson. “We recommend storing your shoes upright on a shelf or in a hard case to protect the structure of the shoe. You can also use shoe trees or shoe straighteners to help them return to their original shape or maintain their original shape.”

As the runways take cues, don’t miss the resurgence of over-the-knee boots. They’re undoubtedly the most striking of suede boots, and whether you opt for a flat or platform style, they speak to your style idiom. While cowboy boots are a staple at designers like Isabel Marant, they’re also taking on a distinctly trendy look this season, with plenty of options from a range of brands. Some are more literal than others, with features like angled and stacked heels and pointed toes being signature details.
