Once we had a workshop and a cast, all we needed was a theater. Plays are very personal, so a big theater for a musical wouldn’t cut it. We needed something more intimate. I understand the Shubert family owns most of them. Would they give us one? Forget the 9-to-5. Motherhood has no schedule—and often it feels like a 9-to-5 and everything in between. In this new series, we’ll look at the busy, messy, sometimes beautiful, often frustrating work of being a mom—and keeping your own life together. Think of it as “a day in the life” for those lost hours. Read our first installment, from Jemima Kirke. And our latest installment, from Hilaria Baldwin.

I wake up before everyone else in the house to get ready for the day and have some time to myself. I check my Oura ring to see if I’ve slept yet. I try to make fun of how bad my grades usually are. Because: What’s the point of sleeping when you have seven kids, 11 and under? I do the dishes and this is my product! I get a glass of water and make coffee, then take the pups out onto the balcony. I made a lawn for them, which is a real lifesaver in the city!

All the men in this play are named Peter. My Peter: Peter Rutter. Broadway Peter: Peter Gallagher. And our other wonderful actor, who plays all the other male roles in the play: Peter Francis James. It’s confusing and magical. My Peter… how did he react to finding himself in a play that was probably going to be transferred to Broadway? I should point out that he’s retired. He’s a psychiatrist, a Jungian psychoanalyst, so if he wasn’t retired, it would be difficult to reveal his personal life. But at this point in his life, it’s a great adventure. He’s a man of boundless curiosity. He’s written two books on sexual harassment. He’s testified in court on behalf of abused women. And he also knew that going back to this time in my life—full of sadness, fear, and absolute joy—would be healing for me and many others. He also happens to be a wonderful writer, and the emails he sent me when we were in love are in the play. His unwavering devotion and care when I was sick are also dramatized. For him, it was also “this out of that.”
